Zei Gezunt with Bubbe's Remedies
For Bloating, Constipation and Diarrhea
Editor: Yael Rosenberg, RN, B.S.H

Though not medical emergencies, the discomfort bloating, constipation, and/or diarrhea cause can ruin our days, our nights, our feeling of well being. Bubbe to the rescue, once again.

Bloating - At times when one of us girls would feel bloated and swollen with water especially just before and during our menstrual period, Bubbe would have just the remedy to “clear out the water.” She would steam some asparagus and have us eat it. (years later I found out that asparagus is indeed a natural diuretic).

For those of us who could not “stomach” asparagus, eating rice before the menstrual cycle begins helps reduce bloating and symptoms of PMS.

Constipation – Bubbe’s advice may be corny, but it helps.
      · “An apple a day helps keep constipation away”
      · Eat vegetables daily
      · Potatoes can help prevent constipation
      · Raw oats can ease constipation.

Diarrhea - Yikes! But Bubbe knows how to stop it.
      · To cure chronic diarrhea boil sweet potatoes, season with salt and pepper, and eat it before bedtime.
      · Dissolve 4 grams of ground cinnamon in a cup of warm water, cover it and let it steep for 15 minutes. Then drink it like tea.
      · Drink rice water periodically during the day.

And of course, B.R.A.T. - Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Tea (and/or Toast).

If your grandmother, aunt, or neighbor revealed an old-fashioned remedy to you, and you would like to share it with us all, please send it to info@zeigezunt.com
