Zei Gezunt with Bubbe's Remedies
For Whooping Cough and Hiccups
Editor: Yael Rosenberg, RN, B.S.H

When the coughs - of the whooping variety - rack your body or even when you're just dealing with an onset of the hiccup attack, Bubbe is here to help you once again.

Whooping Cough - Cook beets with rock sugar for a long time.  Drink for your health.

Hiccups - Bubbe’s instructions were to hold our breath, believing that will make the hiccups go away.  Bubbe’s theory was on the mark. Hiccups occur when the phrenic nerve, which controls the diaphragm, is irritated. The diaphragm, the long, flat muscle that controls breathing, begins to contract with a series of quick jolts, causing a quick intake of air. The air rushes over closed vocal chords and causes them to vibrate, resulting in the hiccup sound. Any action that breaks this cycle will stop the hiccups. Holding our breath is a good method.

If your grandmother, aunt, or neighbor revealed an old-fashioned remedy to you, and you would like to share it with us all, please send it to info@zeigezunt.com
